Guitar Player (An Album of Contemporary Styles by Modern Masters)

This is not an album by Laurindo Almeida, although he has 3 tracks on it. It actually is a very good double various artists-album which gives a marvellous round-up of jazz guitar music at that point in time, 1976. All the music was specially recorded for this project, which makes it quite unique. It's very well-produced by the famous jazz afficionado, Leonard Feather, in cooperation with Guitar Player magazine : the music is played in many different styles, but at the same time the sound image is uncannily consistent. Although B.B. King is, of course, an electric blues player, the acoustic, overdubbed with electric guitar Larry Coryell contribution, 'Autumn in New York', which follows his 'Counting My Tears' seems sequenced perfectly logical. The songs by Lee Ritenour are some of his best, as he avoids here the populist traps which mar his more commercial albums. The liner notes are very informative and, to top it off, it has a nice cover, as you can see.
