Dizzy Gillespie - The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All

As Dizzy Gillespie enjoyed another great year in 1958, the trumpet king embarked on another musical path when he delighted the jazz scene with a another vocabulary where he invited the great tenor saxophonist-composer Benny Golson to record and release this innovative ambitious labour of love. For The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All, Dizzy brilliantly showcases this set of recordings as the pivotal figure of this small band with which he had not been identified often, and when he told Golson to record something new, Golson had suggested that they form an octet and called pianist Gigi Gryce to share the composing on the album, which turned out to be a truly rewarding achievement by Gillespie and Golson. So, with outstanding music mostly composed by Gillespie, Golson and Gryce, the superb track set begins with Blues After Dark, as it proceeds with direct pace on other classic compositions like "Sea Breeze", "Shabozz", "Reminiscing", "A Night At Tony’s", "Smoke Signals" and Just By Myself, while on the five star expanded edition you get a rare tiny recording featuring Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Sonny Stitt and Oscar Peterson on four tracks like "Get Happy" and "Mic’s Jump", which gives it the finishing touch it deserves. As one of two highly successful albums Gillespie and Golson collaborated together (the other is The Ebullient Dizzy Gillespie from 1959), the results from The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All proved to be a great eclectic breakthrough from the two jazz masters, as the accompament and excellent voicing from the straightforward genus not only produced timeless results, but it also provided the refreshingly new framework for The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All, one that will always remain at the top of it’s brass with timeless results, as well as one of Dizzy Gillespie’s greatest and most beloved masterpieces.
