Al Lerner - Ivory and Bone

Al Lerner, who first gained recognition as pianist in the original Harry James Orchestra and then went on to become pianist, arranger and conductor for Frankie Laine and currently the young singing sensation Jimmie Rodgers, adds new laurels to his career with the release of this album. Striking out on his own, Al shows his individuality as a soloist and arranger. He conveys his total musicianship by having contributed three originals, "Broadway Beat", "Torchin'" and "Frustration" to this wonderful collection of standards. The smooth, sophisticated "ivory" of Al Lerner's piano blended with the trombone styling of Hoyt Bohannon is the chemistry that makes the melodic, light and polite jazz-flavored formula of this album so pleasurable. With Al leading the way, the sextet serves up an arresting array of sounds that are always tasty, bright and inventive. Sometimes, it's the concerto-like introductions of Al's piano or the sweet wail of the muted trombone or the sudden break into a clever change of tempo as the entire ensemble joins in and effectively cuts loose. It's all these things and more. It's Al Lerner, his piano touch, his music and an Ivory and Bone sound that is easy to take and come back to again and again !
