Lou McGarity - Music from "Some Like it Hot"

A very talented trombone soloist influenced by Jack Teagarden but possessing his own brassier sound, Lou McGarity was a strong asset to many bands and jam sessions. He started out playing violin when he was seven, not switching to trombone until he was 17. McGarity studied at the University of Georgia from 1934-36, gigged locally in the South (including with Kirk DeVore and Nye Mayhew), and toured with Ben Bernie from 1938-40 before hitting the big time with Benny Goodman from 1940-42. McGarity not only played with Benny Goodman's big band but with his smaller groups -- the first trombonist to do so. McGarity, who through the years often teamed up with his friend and fellow trombonist Cutty Cutshall (including with Goodman), worked with Raymond Scott's Orchestra at CBS from 1942-44, spent time in the military and then rejoined Benny Goodman for a time in 1946. Starting in 1947, he worked as a busy studio musician in New York, often appearing nightly with Dixieland-oriented musicians, including the Lawson/Haggart band, and with the many groups of Eddie Condon. He worked with Bob Crosby in the mid-'60s and was a key member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band from 1968-70 before bad health shortened his life. McGarity recorded as a leader for MGM (four selections in 1955), Jubilee in 1959, Argo in 1959 and Fat Cat's Jazz in 1970.

Wes Montgomery - Back on Indiana Avenue

Resonance’s most recent releases devoted to Montgomery have garnered widespread acclaim. Both 2018’s Wes Montgomery in Paris, a set of 1965 concert recordings from France’s Office of French Radio and Television archives, and 2017’s Smokin’ in Seattle, drawn from 1966 radio dates by the guitarist with pianist Wynton Kelly’s combo, were named among the top archival releases of the year by DownBeat, JazzTimes, and NPR Music’s Jazz Critics Poll.
Like Echoes of Indiana Avenue (2012), In the Beginning (2015), and the live One Night in Indy (2016), Back on Indiana Avenue surveys the music Montgomery made in his hometown during the years before he rocketed to fame after signing with Riverside Records in 1959.
Feldman — known in the industry as “the Jazz Detective” for his ability to ferret out previously unheard music — says, “In many ways, this is another case of Resonance solving a mystery. When we released Echoes of Indiana Avenue, we didn’t know the story of where the tapes had come from, but now with Back on Indiana Avenue we know they came from the great composer/pianist Carroll DeCamp. This release is another ‘holy grail’ find for Wes Montgomery fans.”
In his essay, historian Porter says the provenance of the material on that first Resonance collection became evident after he struck up a friendship with DeCamp, a noted arranger and musician who had been based in Indianapolis for many years. At Porter’s suggestion, DeCamp’s protégé Brook Reindollar contacted Feldman about this precious store of buried recordings — some cut by Montgomery in a studio, some captured informally in “live” settings by DeCamp.
“Eventually,” Porter writes, “with the help of our mutual friend Jamey Aebersold, we tracked down Carroll’s cache of unissued Wes Montgomery recordings — almost three hours worth ! You’ve heard some on Echoes of Indiana Avenue, but we did not know that those tapes came from DeCamp’s collection. This album rectifies that situation by giving Carroll full credit. Even better, it gives you and the world two more excellent hours of never-heard Wes!”
On the DeCamp recordings, Montgomery is heard in full flight in a variety of settings — piano quartets, organ trios, sextets, and drummer-less Nat “King” Cole-style trios. Though DeCamp made no notes on the personnel, dedicated research and listening by Porter and the late musician and educator David Baker suggests that the players included such close associates as Montgomery’s brother Buddy, the guitarist’s longtime organist Melvin Rhyne, pianist John Bunch, and even the legendary Indianapolis-born pianist Carl Perkins just to name a few.
The 22 selections on Back on Indiana Avenue include embryonic versions of several of the numbers Montgomery would record at his early sessions for Riverside, including “'Round Midnight,” “Jingles,” “Whisper Not,” “The End of a Love Affair,” “Ecaroh,” “West Coast Blues,” “Four On Six,” “Mister Walker,” “Tune-Up,” and “Sandu.”
Feldman says, “These are very exciting recordings that Resonance is honored to present in conjunction with the Montgomery Estate. To be able to contribute to a large part of the legacy of such an iconic artist as Wes — with even more newly-discovered, great music — is very special. Unearthing not just run of the mill recordings, but some really great material from one of the guitar’s most distinctive voices, is a momentous event. Stuff like this just doesn’t pop up every day.”
Some 60 years after the music on Back on Indiana Avenue was recorded, Wes Montgomery still inspires awe in the distinguished guitarists who followed him.
As John Scofield notes in his interview, “He was the main man back then in the ’60s, so everybody knew about him. If you were a kid and wanted to learn about jazz guitar, he was at the top of the list.”
Recalling the moment in 1961 that he heard Montgomery for the first time, playing “While We’re Young” on the radio of his 1952 Dodge, his great disciple George Benson recalls, “I had to pull over to the side because I’d never heard this great a tone in all my life.”

John Towner Williams - Jazz Beginnings

When you see John Williams standing before his mighty Boston Pops Orchestra... when you watch him collect another Academy Award or Emmy... when you notice his name as the credits roll by on the major films, have you ever wondered whether he thinks about his roots ?” This was written a few years ago by the jazz reviewer Harvey Siders. Now, looking back to the musical beginnings of John Williams, this 2-CD set may be the perfect answer to his question.
His musical roots, like his credits, are impressive. Much before this highly skilled musician scored and conducted the worldwide acclaimed music of several of the most famous and money-making films of the last 30 years — Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Empire Strikes Back, E T: The Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Accidental Tourist, Schlinder's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, et al.— he was a young swinging elegant pianist and an ambitious arranger/composer in the jazz and pop fields, and that was what gained him recognition in the Hollywood entertainment and recording scenes in the Fifties.

John Towner Williams was born in Flushing, N.Y. in February 8, 1932. His father was a well-known tympanist, and saw to it that Johnny began studying piano when he was eight. He later studied with Robert Van Eps and Rosina Lhevinne, and undertook composition with Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco. He attended Flushing High School, and when his family moved west, the Hollywood High School, where he met his wife, singer Barbara Ruick. During his high school days he led a small band with Miss Ruick as the vocalist. After a hitch in the Air Force, he returned to civilian life in 1955 to start his professional musical career, and soon became interested in composing and arranging, things he has been doing ever since. He quickly earned an impressive string of credits, which included working as a pianist for the Broadway musical production of Three For Tonight, and accompanying conductor for singers Howard Keel and Vic Damone. His classical background, as well as his impressive feeling for jazz, account for his popularity in the West Coast musical circles as both arranger and pianist. As a pianist, he soon worked for some of Hollywood's finest conductors, names such as Les Baxter, Jerry Fielding, Frank de Vol, Nelson Riddle and Leith Stevens. As an arranger, his credits included musical numbers for TV and for many jazz groups. To give you an idea of how versatile he is, listen to these recordings, and while you're listening to this collection, be aware that this were Williams' first recordings, from 1956 to 1958, when all the cats called him Johnny.

Charlie Parker - The Complete Savoy & Dial Recordings (1944-1948)

Words can hardly describe the revolutionary effect of these seminal recordings — collected here on eight full-length CDs, with a comprehensive 93-page booklet with original essays, photos, and detailed discographical information — when first released. Charlie Parker's vision, spectacular technique, and style helped to transform the world of jazz in the 1940s, and it has never been the same. As with the efforts of creative visionaries, his early innovations were at first resisted by some as too radical, but with time, Bird became universally recognized for the genius he was. It is impossible to imagine any serious collection of 20th century music not containing at least some of the tracks collected on this splendid compilation. These disks collect all of Parker's studio sessions on Dial and Savoy, the two labels that assiduously chronicled his career during the decade. The set excludes four CDs of live material and most sessions recorded by amateurs, but includes outtakes, Bird's recordings as a sideman, and tracks cut or issued under the Savoy and Dial labels, including the Spotlite, Stash, Guild, Musicraft, Bel-Tone, and the Comet lines. So many great musicians performed with Bird that part of the thrill is not only the scintillating work of Parker, but also the opportunity to revisit seminal performances by Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell, and a host of others. The sound is, for the most part, remarkably good, making this an indispensable collection for any lover of jazz.
